A Guide to Our Brass Finishes: Brushed Brass, Antique Aurum & Tumbled Aged Brass

Brass finishes bring warmth and depth to any interior, but how the metal is treated fundamentally shapes its character. Whether brushed, tumbled, or aged, each process creates a different tone, texture, and interaction with light, meaning the brass finish you choose has a real impact on how your space feels.

Our three brass finishes — brushed brass, Antique Aurum (coming soon), and tumbled aged brass — each sit within the same golden spectrum, yet tell very different visual stories: from refined modernity to softly aged character. In this guide, we explore the finishes we offer, how they influence the mood of a space, and how to choose the right one for your design vision.

Why Brass Finishes Vary in Appearance

Brass finishes may share the same golden foundation, but it's the finishing process that dramatically shapes how that warmth comes to life in a space.

Tone Variation

Some brass finishes lean towards a brighter golden hue, while others reveal deeper honeyed or aged undertones. Our brushed brass sits at the brighter end of this spectrum, while our Antique Aurum and tumbled aged brass introduce richer, more muted warmth. These tonal shifts influence whether your tapware and hardware feels fresh and contemporary or grounded and nostalgic.

Texture Variation

Surface texture plays a defining role in the visual depth of brass. The fine directional lines of our brushed brass create a refined, architectural quality, while the vibratory tumbling process used for our Antique Aurum and tumbled aged brass introduces gentle irregularity that feels organic and tactile.

Light Reflection

Light interacts with each finish in subtle yet powerful ways. Brushed surfaces diffuse light softly, creating a muted glow, while the textured surfaces of our tumbled finishes introduce shadow and variation that shift throughout the day. These nuances may appear small, yet together they shape the overall atmosphere of your space.

Brushed Brass vs Antique Brass

Despite sharing the same warm metallic foundation, brushed brass and antique brass are two brass finishes that create distinctly different design moods.

Visual Warmth

Brushed brass presents a luminous golden tone that feels fresh and contemporary. Antique brass finishes tend to introduce deeper warmth and slightly muted undertones, creating a softer, more nostalgic presence.

Texture

Brushed brass is defined by fine directional lines across the surface, giving it a smooth, softened appearance. Antique brass finishes often incorporate gentle variation or light distressing, creating a more organic visual texture and a darker, matte surface.

Modern vs Heritage Style

With its clean, linear brushing, brushed brass feels architectural, elegant, and modern. An antique brass finish leans towards heritage-inspired spaces, bringing a sense of age, craftsmanship, and character.

When To Use Each

Brushed brass works beautifully in modern, Hamptons, and coastal interiors, especially when paired with marble tiles, travertine, terrazzo, or neutral cabinetry. An antique brass finish feels particularly at home in farmhouse, Mediterranean, rustic, or traditional interiors, where vintage warmth and organic texture play a central role.

Tumbled Aged Brass vs Antique Aurum

Both brass finishes evoke a sense of age and warmth, yet their character couldn't be more different; one evolves over time, while the other is carefully refined from the start.

Artisanal Tumbling

Both finishes begin with the same bespoke technique: a three-step vibratory tumbling process using small abrasive stones and ceramic materials that gently work the metal's surface, introducing subtle texture and depth. The result is an organic, softly irregular finish that moves away from uniformity and towards a more tactile, design-led aesthetic.

Raw Brass vs PVD Coating

Our tumbled aged brass finish is left raw and unsealed, allowing it to respond naturally to its environment. Over time, each piece develops a unique patina; frequently touched areas become lighter, while untouched surfaces deepen and oxidise, sometimes revealing subtle flecks of green as the brass naturally reacts with moisture and air. This gradual evolution creates a finish that feels lived-in and inherently individual.

In contrast, Antique Aurum is sealed with our durable Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) coating. This preserves the rich tone and textural detail achieved through tumbling, while ensuring long-term resistance to tarnishing, corrosion, and wear.

Distressed vs Refined

Tumbled aged brass offers a more expressive, time-worn aesthetic; one that continues to evolve with use. Antique Aurum delivers a refined interpretation of aged brass, balancing vintage warmth with consistency and durability.

When To Use Each

Tumbled aged brass suits spaces where authenticity and imperfection are part of the design language: think wabi-sabi interiors, artisan-influenced kitchens, or bathrooms where raw materials take centre stage. Pair it with limewashed walls, raw timber, or handmade tiles to draw out its organic character.

Antique Aurum works well in spaces that call for vintage warmth but demand durability and consistency: heritage-inspired homes, high-traffic bathrooms, or hospitality settings where a lived-in look needs to hold up over time. It pairs beautifully with dark timber, natural stone tiles, and richly toned fabrics.

Which Brass Finish Should You Choose?

When it comes to brass finishes, the right choice is shaped by the atmosphere you want to create: how the space feels, how it evolves, and how materials work together over time.

If your space features clean lines, minimalist design, and natural stone, brushed brass will feel like it belongs. If you want warmth with a sense of history but don't want to think about maintenance, Antique Aurum gives you that richness with PVD durability. And if you love the idea of a finish that's yours alone, one that shifts and deepens over the years, tumbled aged brass is the one.

Choose brushed brass if:

  • You're drawn to clean, contemporary warmth and prefer a smooth finish with a durable, low-maintenance PVD coating
  • Your space features modern materials like marble, travertine, or terrazzo and a minimalist or Hamptons-inspired design

Choose Antique Aurum if:

  • You want rich, vintage warmth with subtle texture that feels softly aged yet stays consistent over time
  • You value the durability of a modern, low-maintenance PVD coating in a high-traffic space

Choose tumbled aged brass if:

  • You're drawn to authentic, evolving character and appreciate finishes that develop a natural patina over time
  • You're designing a space that prioritises depth, texture, and lived-in warmth above uniformity

All three brass finishes are available across our range of tapware, showers, sinks, hardware, and accessories, making it easy to carry a cohesive look through every room.
