FLORALS FOR CHRISTMAS WITH THE BUD CLUB
Florals, regardless of the occasion, infuse celebratory energy into the home. This is why for Christmas, we think flower arrangements could elicit the perfect ambience to welcome in the seasonal period.
As we aren’t well-versed in the world of floristry, when we found Justine from The Bud Club, we knew we had to pick her brains about the craft. She welcomed us into her phenomenal studio on the Gold Coast and answered a few of our burning questions.
Keep reading for her insights on flowers as a whole, as well as pointers when creating your own arrangements.
Q1. HOW DID THE BUD CLUB START?
Shortly after COVID-19 hit Australia, I found myself in the position where I was questioning what it was I truly wanted to be doing in my life, which inevitably led me to make the decision to leave my full time visual merchandising role in April of 2019.
Like many, I was trying to figure out what my next move was and had a burning desire to create something for myself and be completely independent in my career, which reflects my individualistic personality well. At the time, I had no idea what this would look like or how I would approach this.
I know it’s cliché, but when one door closes, another one truly does open.
My mum, knowing I had a passion for flowers, took me into her local florist Wild Lotus in Helensvale. We got chatting with the beautiful shop owner, Imogen, where one thing led to another, and I was in her store a couple of days later learning the ropes. Feeling in my natural habitat, I instantly fell in love with floristry!
I would wake up around 3:00am, drive to the Brisbane Flower Markets and would delve into making bouquets in my garage, bringing what would be The Bud Club into fruition! Two and a half years later, I’m still waking up at 3:00am and continue to practice this beautiful art every day. An evolving dream come true for me.
Q2. WHAT DO FLORALS MEAN TO YOU IN YOUR LIFE?
Flowers to me embody freedom. Freedom to express myself creatively, freedom to create the life I desire and freedom to connect with an array of people that continue to inspire what I do.
Q3. WHAT IS IT ABOUT FLOWERS THAT TRANSFORM THE FEEL OF A SPACE?
Flowers have the capacity to transform a space by evoking emotion. This is my absolute favourite part about floristry. They bring life, colour and depth to every space.
I truly believe there is a therapeutic benefit from having beautiful fresh flowers in your space as they evoke happiness and stimulate all of your senses. They are space altering — and to me, this is a beautiful thing. I adore the feeling flowers bring to any space!
Q4. WHAT FLOWERS AND COLOUR PALETTES WILL YOU BE GRAVITATING TOWARDS THIS CHRISTMAS?
I will be swapping out the predicted colour red this year for orange to create a more tonal and neutral colour palette. Pairing it with lush olive leaf greens, brown cinnamon sticks (which smell incredible!) and subtle pops of white throughout all of my arrangements. A new take on Christmas themed florals.
Q5. WHAT WOULD YOU PAIR FESTIVE FLORALS WITH?
Food, family and friends! What Christmas is all about! Spending time with your family and giving back to the ones you love. Festive floral arrangements elevate any celebratory styling and are always the finishing touch!
Q6. DO YOU HAVE ANY SEASONAL STYLING ADVICE FOR THOSE WHO ARE FEELING A LITTLE STUCK?
There is no right or wrong. It’s about being creative and staying true to what feels good for you, starting somewhere and building off that! Begin with a base colour and continue to add to it, knowing you can always remove pieces if they don’t look quite right.
If you are unsure, keep it simple with a trailing olive leaf centrepiece running down the centre of your table. Decorate with all of the delicious Christmas foods, candles and, of course, flowing wine!
